How much time do you spend on each caricature at an event?
Roughly three minutes per face for black-and-white drawings, and four minutes for colour.
How long in advance should we make a booking?
The earlier the better. Some dates are extremely popular.
How do we go about it?
Contact me by email (tinushornartist@gmail.com and tinushorn.com), or phone (or whatsapp) me on 083 2908838 to check availability. If your date is available and you want to book, I will send you my banking details. A 50% deposit with proof of payment secures the date.
What happens to the deposit if I decide to cancel?
Once a date is booked, I turn away other prospective clients, who are placed on a reserve list. In case of cancellation, the deposit is forfeited unless someone on the reserve list takes over the booking.
Do you only work in Cape Town?
No. I am available for bookings anywhere on the planet. Venus to0 hot, Mars too cold, alas.
Are some people offended by your drawings?
People see me in action, so they know in advance to expect a comical interpretation. Most sitters are extremely chuffed. Those who don’t like the idea simply choose to pass.
What is better, black and white or colour?
Each has its own appeal. I do more black and white sketches per hour, so if you want the same number of colour pics, you have to book me for additional time.
Do some sitters at events make requests?
Yes. The ones I hear most often are “draw me skinny” and “please don’t draw my nose/ears/forehead big”.
Do you comply?
Let’s just say I draw what I see, in my usual style.
Do you work from photos?
Not at live events, but in advance to serve as as place markers.
Do you do sketches of large groups, such as staff of a company, on the same sheet of paper?
Yes, but not at live event. Prices are calculated according to the number of faces and the complexity of the commissioned piece.
What is your turnaround time for a commission from photos?
It depends on the complexity and number of sketches, but I prefer to get a two-week heads-up. If you need something in a hurry, feel free to enquire whether I am available. I will help if I can.
How long have you been doing caricatures?
My first published caricature, of cricket legend Clive Rice, appeared in The Star newspaper in Johannesburg in 1995, while I was employed there as a sports journalist. It led to a full-time appointment at Beeld as artist/writer, where I further developed my caricature skills.
Are you a full-time caricature artist?
No. I’m involved in numerous creative pursuits, including animation and fine art. Here’s a link to my portrait blog: http://tinushornportraits.blogspot.com.
